INTERACTIVE HR DIAGRAM FOR THE ADLER PLANETARIUM
#d3.js #worldwidetelescope #planetarium #chicago

The project resulted into a visualization for the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. I will give some background below, or you can directly jump to the visualization here.

An HR diagram (see image below) is a classic astronomy information visualization used to classify stars according to their luminosity and their temperature that dates back to the 1910.

I used the power of data-driven documents (d3) to create a new animated and interactive version of the HR diagram that evolves in time from birth to an age of 5 billion years. In this visualization I used simulated data of a cluster of 100-star similar to our Sun's birthplace (a ~ 5 billion years old star). The HR diagram is synchronized with a plot of the space coordinates of the stars and with imagery of the observed star cluster form the World Wide Telescope. Users can explore these clusters and compare them to the simulated cluster at a similar evolutionary stage.
